How it works

The leaf, not the fruit.

Grape leaf extract is taken from the leaves of the grape vine (Vitis vinifera), not the fruit and not the pips. The vine puts a different mix of compounds into its leaves than into its grapes, and the leaf is particularly high in flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, alongside catechin derivatives and stilbenes.

A review of Vitis vinifera as a cosmetic raw material works through the chemistry of each part of the plant, leaf and stem included, and describes the polyphenols behind the antioxidant activity the species is valued for in cosmetics. Separate laboratory work on a grape leaf extract found it active against mediators of oxidative stress in skin cell models. That is early, test-tube evidence for why the leaf is worth using, rather than a claim about what a finished cream does on skin.

In a formula it works alongside the other antioxidants rather than carrying the job alone, and it suits daily use, morning or night.
