How it works

Jojoba oil, pressed from the seed of Simmondsia chinensis, is technically a liquid wax rather than a true oil, and is structurally very close to the wax esters found naturally in human sebum. That similarity is what makes it unusually compatible with skin.

Research reviewing plant oils in skin care has found that jojoba helps strengthen the skin's outermost layer and protect it against moisture loss. That is why jojoba is so valued for supporting a comfortable, well-moisturised skin barrier.

Jojoba oil works well as a finishing step, applied alone or mixed into a moisturiser, over the products layered underneath. Its similarity to skin's own sebum means it's generally well tolerated even on oilier or blemish-prone skin, unlike heavier plant oils.

Questions

Is jojoba oil actually an oil?
Not strictly. Although it looks and pours like an oil, jojoba is almost entirely made up of wax esters, which is why it is described as a liquid wax rather than an oil or fat. Unlike most plants, which store energy in their seeds as oil, jojoba stores it as liquid wax. (Fagoaga et al., 2026; Sturtevant et al., 2020; COSMILE Europe)
Why is jojoba oil compared with the skin's own oil?
Because the two are similar. The European cosmetic ingredient database describes jojoba as very similar to the skin's own waxes, so it combines well with them, and notes that it spreads easily and has a caring, smoothing effect that is especially appreciated on drier and more mature skin. It is one reason jojoba is so widely used in moisturisers. (COSMILE Europe)
How does jojoba oil feel on skin?
Silky and easy to spread. Jojoba glides over skin and leaves it feeling smooth and cared for, which is why it works as well in a light day cream as in a richer night cream. (COSMILE Europe)

About the plant

Jojoba, Simmondsia chinensis, is a desert shrub native to the Sonoran Desert and Baja California regions of North America. It is so distinct from other plants that it is the only member of its own botanical family, Simmondsiaceae, and individual plants are either male or female. (Sturtevant et al., 2020)

The seeds are the valuable part. Unlike most plants, which store energy as oil, jojoba stores it as liquid wax, which can make up more than half of the seed's weight. (Sturtevant et al., 2020)
