How it works

What makes a stick a stick.

Sunflower seed wax is the hard, waxy fraction separated from sunflower seed oil (Helianthus annuus) when the oil is chilled and filtered, a step called winterisation. What comes off is a pale, brittle wax built largely from long-chain wax esters, with a melting point well above room temperature.

That melting point is the whole point of it. A stick or a solid balm has to hold its shape in a warm bag or a pocket and then soften against skin, and a hard plant wax is what builds that structure. Sunflower seed wax also thickens an oil phase into a balm without the heavy, draggy feel a thicker butter can leave behind.

Once applied it stays on the surface as a light occlusive film, which is why it is common in sun sticks and balms where the formula needs to stay where you put it. We have not found a peer-reviewed study on sunflower seed wax as a skincare ingredient in its own right, so we describe it here by its well-established role in a formula rather than a specific skin claim.
