The Korean Skincare Routine, in Four Simple Steps

The one idea behind a Korean skincare routine: layer from the lightest texture to the richest.

The Korean skincare routine rests on one idea: apply thin layers of skincare from the lightest texture to the richest, so each layer feels comfortable and none feels heavy. The famous ten-step version can be reduced to four steps, which are cleanse, hydrate with a serum, moisturise and, in the morning, add sun protection. Four steps keep the method and drop most of the shelf.

This guide explains where the routine comes from, why the order matters, and how to build a four-step version for morning and evening. At Enrichment Skincare we care more about a routine you will keep doing than one that looks impressive on a bathroom shelf.

What the ten steps are, briefly

The routine became widely known through Korean beauty culture, and the version most people picture has around ten steps. It usually starts with an oil or balm cleanser, followed by a water-based cleanser. Next come an exfoliating step, a toner, an essence and a serum. Many routines then add a sheet mask or an eye product, before a moisturiser and, in the morning, sun protection.

Each step is small, and each is optional. Some people follow all ten every day. Others follow three. Both are reasonable ways to look after your skin, and the ten steps work best as a menu you choose from.

The principle that matters: thin to thick

The useful part of the routine is the order. Products go on from the thinnest texture to the thickest: watery layers first, gels and lotions next, creams and oils last. Thin layers settle in quickly, so you can build several of them without a heavy feeling. A rich cream applied first can make the next layer feel slippery and uneven, which is why the order matters.

Moisturiser belongs at the end. Apply it soon after cleansing, while your skin still feels slightly damp, so it seals in that moisture.

Arrange your routine from the thinnest texture to the thickest, and follow that order for a week. Notice whether your skin feels comfortable through the day, and adjust from there. Small changes are easier to keep than a complete overhaul, and the steps below use Enrichment textures made to layer well together, from a silky serum to a moisturiser that settles in quickly.

A four-step version

Here is the whole routine. Steps one to three are for morning and evening. Step four is for the morning only.

Step one: cleanse. In the morning, a gentle cleanse is enough. Linden Flower Micellar Water is a rinse-free option. You sweep it over the face with a cotton pad, and it leaves skin feeling fresh and comfortable. If you prefer to rinse, Clarifying Gel Cleanser is a light gel that leaves skin comfortable rather than tight. Both list aloe leaf juice first and glycerin third.

Step two: hydrate. The classic routine adds a toner and an essence here. We keep it simple: apply your serum straight after cleansing, while skin is still slightly damp. Damask Rose Hydrating Serum is a silky serum whose first three ingredients are aloe leaf juice, jojoba seed oil and glycerin, with rose flower water in fifth place. If you would like a different feel, Elderberry Antioxidant Serum has a silky texture of its own, with water and glycerin leading its ingredient list.

Step three: moisturise. Seal the routine with a moisturiser, and choose the texture that suits how your skin feels. Weightless Hydration Gel is an oil-free gel that sinks in quickly and leaves no shine. Aloe leaf juice and glycerin lead its ingredient list, and it also contains sodium hyaluronate, a form of hyaluronic acid. If your skin feels dry and you like a cream, Jojoba Silk Day Cream has jojoba seed oil third on its list and a texture that disappears quickly.

Step four, morning only: sun protection. Finish the morning with a sunscreen. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a broad-spectrum sunscreen, protecting against both UVA and UVB, with an SPF of 30 or higher, and reapplying it about every two hours when outdoors. It takes about a minute and belongs in every morning.

In the evening the sequence is the same without step four: cleanse, serum, moisturise. Because you are not heading out, this is the moment to slow down. Take an extra minute to press each layer in with your palms, and let it settle before you move on. The whole routine takes around five minutes, which is what makes it possible to keep up.

Double cleansing, and whether you need it

Double cleansing means using two cleansers in a row, usually an oil or balm first and a water-based one second. It is most often done in the evening, after a day of makeup or sunscreen.

If you wear neither, a single gentle cleanse is enough. If you do, you can double cleanse with the two products above: sweep micellar water over the face first, then rinse with the gel. Skin should feel fresh and comfortable afterwards, never tight. If it feels tight, use less, or use one cleanser only.

Questions people ask

What order should skincare go on?

From the thinnest texture to the thickest. In this routine that means cleanse, serum, moisturiser and, in the morning, sunscreen. Each layer should feel settled before the next one goes on.

Do I need an essence or a toner?

No. Both are optional in a four-step routine. Applying your serum straight after cleansing, while skin is still slightly damp, gives you the same light first layer before your moisturiser.

How long should I wait between layers?

There is no fixed rule. About thirty seconds is enough for most textures, or until the layer no longer feels wet. Give your moisturiser a moment to settle before you apply sunscreen, so the sunscreen goes on smoothly.

Is Korean skincare good for mature skin?

The principle works at any age, because it is about texture and comfort. Let how your skin feels guide your choice of texture: a gel moisturiser when skin feels comfortable, a cream when it feels dry. The four steps stay the same.

A routine works when you keep doing it, and four steps applied from thin to thick are easier to keep than ten. If you would like help choosing where to begin, the skincare quiz narrows it down in a couple of minutes. You can read more about how we choose our formulas on our about page.
