How to Build a Kojic Acid Routine, Morning and Evening

Kojic acid rewards consistency: use it regularly, pair it with daily SPF, and dark spots look lighter over time.

Our kojic acid guide covers what kojic acid is and how it works. This is its practical companion: where kojic acid sits in your routine morning and evening, what it pairs beautifully with, and how to give it the best possible conditions to do its work.

Kojic acid is one of the most elegant ingredients for a more even-looking complexion. Born from fermentation, it helps even the look of skin tone over time, which is why the way you use it matters as much as the formula you choose. A well-built kojic acid routine is refreshingly simple: the right texture in the right place, applied every day, and always finished with sunscreen in the morning.

The step that makes everything else worthwhile: daily SPF

If there is one step not to skip, it is sunscreen. UV exposure is one of the main drivers of uneven pigment, so kojic acid and a daily SPF are natural partners: one works on the look of the unevenness that's already there, the other helps keep new unevenness from forming. In a four-and-a-half-year randomised trial of 903 adults, those who used a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day showed 24% less visible skin ageing than those who used it only when they chose to (Hughes et al., 2013). Sunscreen is part of the result, not an afterthought. Our Sun Protect Tinted Fluid SPF30 is a mineral formula with zinc oxide and a sheer, skin-toned tint, made for exactly this final step.

Your morning kojic acid routine

  • Cleanse. Choose a gentle cleanser that leaves skin comfortable rather than tight. Kojic acid sits best on a calm, well-hydrated canvas.
  • Serum. Smooth two to three drops of our Kojic Acid Illuminating Serum over cleansed skin, paying particular attention to areas of uneven tone. Alongside kojic acid, it carries ascorbyl palmitate (a fat-soluble form of vitamin C), sea buckthorn fruit oil and rosemary leaf extract for antioxidant support, in a jojoba-rich base that feels silky rather than sticky.
  • Moisturise. Our Kojic Acid Illuminating Cream layers naturally over the serum, adding softness and hydration with glycerin, betaine and sodium PCA while keeping kojic acid working across the whole face. If you prefer a lighter morning, follow the serum with any moisturiser you love.
  • Protect. Finish with a generous layer of SPF, every day, whatever the weather.

Your evening kojic acid routine

Evening is about gentle consistency. Cleanse thoroughly to lift away sunscreen and the day, then apply the serum and cream in the same order as the morning. With no SPF to follow, the cream becomes your final step, and its richer texture makes it a comforting way to close the day. Using kojic acid morning and evening is lovely once your skin is comfortable with it, but there's no need to rush: starting once a day, or every other day for the first couple of weeks, is a gentle way to see how your skin responds.

Once or twice a week: the polish

Our Kojic Acid Face & Hand Polish brings gentle physical exfoliation to the routine, with fine perlite to smooth away dull surface cells, shea butter to soften, and kojic acid alongside. Massage it into damp skin in slow circles, rinse, then carry on with your serum and cream. Once or twice a week is plenty. Exfoliating more often doesn't make skin glow faster, and a calm, comfortable barrier is what lets everything else in the routine perform at its best. On polish evenings, skip any other exfoliating step.

Don't forget your hands

Hands see as much sun as your face, often more, and they're usually the last place anyone remembers sunscreen. That's why our polish is made for both face and hands. Use it on the backs of your hands as part of the same weekly moment, follow with a rich hand cream, and keep a little SPF on the backs of your hands on bright days.

What pairs beautifully with kojic acid

  • Vitamin C. A natural partner. Kojic acid and vitamin C are often formulated together, as they are in our serum and cream.
  • Hydrators. Glycerin, betaine, sodium PCA and hyaluronic acid all sit comfortably alongside kojic acid and help keep skin soft and supple while it works.
  • Niacinamide. It works on the look of uneven tone through a different route and is generally easy to layer. Our niacinamide guide covers it in full.

What to space out

Exfoliating acids and retinoids can be wonderful, but they're best not stacked with kojic acid on the same evening, particularly at the start. If you'd like to add our Brightening Glycolic Acid Toner, introduce it on separate evenings once your kojic acid routine feels settled, and keep polish nights free of other exfoliants. One clear focus per evening is the most comfortable way to build a routine that lasts. If skin ever feels tight or starts to sting, pare back to cleanser, cream and SPF for a few days before reintroducing anything.

Patience, beautifully spent

Kojic acid works with your skin's own rhythm, so think in months rather than days. Kojic acid works gradually, so a change in the look of dark spots is a matter of months rather than weeks: a reason to settle in rather than chase overnight change. Take a photo in natural light when you begin and another a few months in, enjoy the routine in between, and let consistency do its quiet work. Our dark spots timeline guide looks at what the research shows about pace.
