How it works

Avocado oil, pressed from the flesh of Persea americana, is rich in oleic acid alongside vitamins A, D, and E, a fatty-acid and vitamin profile suited to supporting the skin's own lipid barrier.

As an emollient, avocado oil helps soften and condition skin by filling in gaps between skin cells and helping reduce water loss, supporting the skin's outer lipid layer. This is the basis for its long traditional use on dry, rough or compromised-feeling skin, leaving it soft, supple and comfortable.

Avocado oil is best used as the last step of an evening routine, layered over lighter serums to seal in hydration. Its rich texture suits dry or compromised-feeling skin especially well, though those with oilier or blemish-prone skin may prefer a lighter oil.

Questions

How is avocado oil made?
Avocado oil is obtained from the flesh of the ripe avocado rather than the stone. Both the avocado variety and the way the oil is extracted shape its composition, colour and feel. (COSMILE Europe; Liu et al., 2023; García-Ramón et al., 2025)
What is avocado oil made of?
It is mostly oleic acid, a monounsaturated fatty acid, with palmitic acid as the second main fatty acid, followed by linoleic and palmitoleic acids. It also naturally contains vitamin E. The exact balance varies between avocado varieties. (Liu et al., 2023; García-Ramón et al., 2025; COSMILE Europe)
What does avocado oil do in skincare?
In cosmetics it is listed as a skin-conditioning ingredient. The European cosmetic ingredient database describes it as a rich oil that is well received by the skin and leaves it smooth and supple, which is why it is especially popular for dry or flaky-feeling skin. (COSMILE Europe)

About the plant

The avocado tree, Persea americana, belongs to the Lauraceae family and is native to Mexico and Central America. It is now grown in warm temperate and subtropical climates throughout the world. (USDA GRIN; COSMILE Europe)

The oil comes from the flesh of the ripe fruit. Its composition, and so its colour and feel, varies with the variety of avocado and with how the oil is extracted. (COSMILE Europe; García-Ramón et al., 2025; Liu et al., 2023)
