Gentle skin and hair care

How it works

Linden, also called lime tree (Tilia cordata), produces small, pale, fragrant flowers that are dried and infused as a herbal tea. In skin and hair care the flowers are extracted to make Linden Flower Extract, a gentle extract used across face, body and hair care.

Linden flowers are rich in phenolic acids and flavonoids alongside other plant compounds, and their use in gentle skin and hair care builds on this well-characterised chemistry and the flower's long tradition of use.

Questions

What is linden flower extract?
It is an extract of the flowers of the linden or small-leaved lime tree, Tilia cordata. Linden flowers are best known as a herbal tea: in Europe, the dried flowers of Tilia cordata and its close relatives have a long-standing traditional use, including as an infusion made with boiling water. In skincare the same flowers are extracted to make the cosmetic ingredient. (EMA/HMPC, 2012)
Is linden the same as lime?
In Britain the linden tree is usually called a lime, and Tilia cordata's common English names include small-leaved lime, small-leaf linden and littleleaf linden. It is a broadleaf tree of the mallow family (Malvaceae), so here 'lime' refers to the tree and its flowers, not to the citrus fruit of the same name. (USDA GRIN Taxonomy)
What does research on linden flower extract show?
Research has characterised linden flower chemistry in detail, including its phenolic acids, flavonoids and other plant compounds. Its use in gentle skin and hair care builds on that well-characterised composition and the flower's long-standing traditional use in Europe. (Symma et al., 2021; EMA/HMPC, 2012)

About the plant

Small-leaved lime, Tilia cordata, is a broadleaf tree of the mallow family (Malvaceae). It is native across Europe, from the British Isles and Scandinavia south to Spain and Turkey, and east into the Caucasus and western Siberia. It is valued as an ornamental and shade tree. (USDA GRIN Taxonomy)

The flowers used can come from Tilia cordata, the large-leaved Tilia platyphyllos, the hybrid Tilia x vulgaris, or a mixture of them. (EMA/HMPC, 2012)
